The Lunch Table

The apple bumped along the middle of the table, rolling aimlessly and forgotten back and forth. It was not going to be eaten. Miscellaneous expressions bloomed on the kid’s faces when they realized what was being served for lunch. Girls scrunched their noses and pulled their lips into a faint pucker as they considered the fat content of the pudding and the zit factor in the oily potato chips.
“Eww… Chili again?” They whispered. “I really don’t want to eat that.” Eventually they settled at their tables and prepared to share the most exciting parts of their day with the rest of us.
“Hey lunch-bagger.” The poorly constructed label was hurled at me in a joking manner. They use this term to remind me that my food is not neatly presented on a multicolored platter like theirs. Instead I bring my own lunch from home, in a bag. Bag or no bag, all of us do partake in eating lunch in the cafeteria, but I think eating is mostly just a facade for the true purpose of a middle school lunch table. A place like this is where secrets are freely dumped onto the tables for anyone in the group to hear. When you think about it, it really must be true. Students are herded into a private room in which multiple tables sit waiting for them. Certain groups of kids migrate to their own tables, making outsiders completely unwelcome to their discussion. The girls pull their hair back tightly in order to keep it from falling into their already displeasing food. The boys’ hair flops and twists in random directions as if they had just woken up from a nice fourth hours nap.
Screeching voices surround everyone, echoes bounce off the white walls and ceilings, resulting in the loudest part of my day. The gossip is always riveting; if your news is not intriguing enough the floor is ripped out from under you and given to the next person in hopes that their story is better than yours. I try to keep my mouth shut when it comes to gossip, but once in a while I find myself with a pressing urge to reveal a secret or two. Usually when I try this disgusted faces are cast at me implying that whatever I said was completely ridiculous and boring, and then their attention, along with mine, is easily snatched away by something more captivating.
In the quieter moments as we pack up our debris, I notice the true character of the lunch tables. Masked by the dark speckled formica, kids leave their marks. Sharpies lay down heart shapes enclosing things like “T&M FOREVER, 2010.” A smile teases my lips as I explore the possibilities of who “T&M” could be, and how they will think of themselves being together “FOREVER” in six months. As far as school goes, lunch is by far both my favorite and most eventful part of the exciting middle school day.

Noting the New

It was last Tuesday, and I was sitting at the kitchen table watching my mom make dinner. Usually as I sit in my normal spot after finishing my homework, there are like a bazillion thoughts running through my head all at once, did I study enough for my test tomorrow?... Oh my goodness my fingernail polish I chipping, maybe I should fix that before school in the morning!... Alice said Billy liked me but I wonder if maybe she might have been kidding. Anyway, to get back to the point much unlike my typical routine, this night I could only think of one thing. It was the way my mom had maneuvered the hot dogs into the pot. You see I have been a vegetarian for a while, and I knew what if felt like to be tempted with a piece of bacon or a slice of turkey here and there, but nothing had ever tempted me as much as that hotdog had right then. After about ten minutes of fighting an internal battle over one little hotdog, I had made a definite decision. I needed to eat the hotdog! There was absolutely no choice. So I had a wonderful dinner with the rest of my family that night, and I don’t think I could ever go be back to being a vegetarian again. Well that’s my news, and the moral of this story is that meat is yummy!

BFF Blowup's

Hey teen talk, and everybody else out there, I need some help! I was at school a while ago and a couple girls and I tried to hook my BFF up with this guy she really likes. At first I was so excited because we got them together and she was super happy, but for like he whole week after that she was seriously obsessed with him, and he was all she talked about. She was texting him like every other second, and it got kind of annoying, but I just ignored it because she was excited. Then she started to ignore me, and when I would invite her over my house she would tell me that she was hanging out with him instead. Then she would stop returning my calls and didn’t even really talk to me at school anymore. So last week I blew up, I went up to her at school and told her that I thought she was being a jerk and I should have never hooked them up in the first place. Long story short she walked off all mad at me and we haven’t spoken since. I kind of feel really bad, and I don’t know how to tell her. We’ve been friends since like the diaper days and it would really suck to loose her now. Please help I don’t know what to do!!!!

My Story

My Story

By: Laney Creed
Hi my name is Laney Creed, and I’m from San Francisco, California. I’m thirteen years old and I go to a public middle school in the city. I’ve always gotten HORRIBLE grades, I mean like just barley passing. My parents were always actively trying to help me bring my grades up, but nothing ever worked. One day when my mom was so fed up with all of it, she decided it was time to try something new. Bribery, she told me that if I could get all A’s for at least three months in a row, she would take me on the biggest shopping spree of my life! My mom obviously knows me better than anyone else, because this sparked my attention immediately. My parents hate bribing so I was shocked when I heard her offer.
“Are you serious?” I asked. I couldn’t help but let out a sheer screech of happiness. I went to school the next day totally motivated and completely confident that I was going to get great grades. Turns out it wasn’t too hard to get all A’s when I really set my mind to it. Not only did I have my AMAZING shopping spree, but also I learned that I am the only one who can control my future. I am now an “A” student, and it’s not because my parents want me to be one, it’s because I want to be one!

Feel free to tell Laney what you think, by commenting on her post. If you have a story that you want to share, you can email it to us at mystory.teentalk@gmail.com Thanks’ for visiting Totally Teen Talk!

Downright Humiliated

By: Kelly Lane
Sommerville New Jersey

Hi, I love your blog. Finally a place where I can tell my stuff without anyone knowing what a dork I am! Ha, I'm not really a dork, I just have fun
acting like one sometimes.  Some of my best friends are dorks, and chances
are they will go much further in life then me.  But you never know, I might surprise everyone yet.  You asked for embarrassing stories.  This one tops the cake.  There was a blood drive at school so I decided to give some of myself for some other poor person in need of blood.  It was a good thought. Unfortunately, my body didn't really want to give up the blood as much as I did.  I got up from the table feeling all proud of myself, with the cutest guy in my class laying on the "blood giving table' right next to me.  I
passed out from the blood loss and landed on the ground.  I woke up with people, and him standing over me.  At first I wondered what happened and I
saw his cute face and got lost for a moment in his eyes.  Then I realized I had wet myself.  Apparently a common thing when you pass out - ALL of your
muscles relax and down you go - and out it goes. They took me to the nurses office and called my mom.  This is my most embarrassing day at school so far. I hope it never gets worse than that.

Feel free to tell kelly what you think, by commenting on her post. If you have an embarrassing story you can email it to us at  embarrassed.teentalk@gmail.com Thanks’ for visiting Totally Teen Talk!

Ask Emma

Dear Emma,

I’m having a slumber party tomorrow with a couple of my friends. We all wanted to go ride our bikes around town and go shopping, but its pouring rain, so we have to stay inside! Whenever I have these friends over, we always play outside so I have no idea what to do. What are some fun things we could do inside?
 Sincerely,
Laurie

Dear Laurie,
When I have friends over, every once in a while just to get things going, I suggest a blind makeover! Get out all of you cheap makeup (lipstick and eye shadow work the best). After you’ve retrieved all of your makeup tie a bandana around one of your friends eyes. Pick up some of your makeup, for example your tube of lipstick, put it in your friend’s hands, and direct it to your lips, then let go and let your blind friend apply the lipstick. After you’ve had all of your makeup put on, have your friend remove the bandana and pick up a mirror, and giggles are guaranteed! just be yourself and go from there!
Sincerely,
Emma

If you have more suggestions for Laurie, please tell her your ideas by commenting on the post. If you have a question for Emma just email her at emma.teentalk@gmail.com. Thanks’ for visiting Totally Teen Talk!
